Finding the Miraculous in Everyday Life - Guatemala

Our "First Family" in Santa Maria de Jesus
I have been in Guatemala since February 15.  We do at least one service trip a year with a remarkable organization - From Houses to Homes.  If you have never done a service trip, I highly recommend it.  It is the best experience for  so many reasons - and I promise that you will come back more rejuvenated than if you spent a week on the beach!

The family we built for this time in Ciudad Vieja

On our first two trips - in February and May of 2010, we built homes for two different families.  The construction process is always the same - on day one, you dig and pour the foundation and several rows of cinder block bricks.  Each day you add 4 - 5 more rows of bricks, and then on Day 5, you install the door, window, roof, paint the inside and outside, and hand your family the keys to their new house.
Our "second family" from San Antonio des Aguas Calientes

The bonds made with the families we build for, the other volunteers, and the staff of From Houses to Homes are heartwarming, loving and uplifting.
From Houses to Homes Workers and Staff

They are so grateful - their lives are immediately changed by our work.  And in turn, they give us the experience to feel our innate goodness.  It's a win win both ways, but I always feel that we receive the best end of the bargain.

After all,

how often do we have the opportunity to have a direct positive impact on the poorest of the poor?

How often do we have the opportunity to feel like our lives have transcendent meaning?

How often do we get a glimpse at how indigenous populations live and get to peek into their culture?

Most of all, these trips are reminders to me and my family that material possessions are not what make us happy.  We know lots of comfortable people who don't have the joy, easy smiles, love of community and family, and lightheartedness that this community has.

And of course, there is all the color and texture, the tapestries and architecture and the slow pace of life that get me every time.

A glimpse inside an open doorway yields a colorful surprise!

As I sit in the airport waiting for our flight home, my heart and mind are already planning our next trip back!  Hasta la proxima ves mes amigos en Guatemala.

Stencil Girl & Walnut Hollow

If you're hopping along, you've arrived here from Julie Snidle's blog.  Because today is the Stencil Girl blog hop using products from Walnut Hollow!  And there's a big giveaway - details at the end of this post.

Since I was once a decorative painter, I know that stencils are NOT just for art journals and canvases; it was fun to have a chance to use them on something completely different!

Here are the 5" High letters I received from Walnut Hollow.

"Breathe" is one of my words for 2014 - a reminder to stop, pause, inhale and exhale.

I made a mixture of gold paint and Aztec Gold Mica powder and painted the letters.

Then, I stenciled onto tissue paper using my Borders Stencil and Medallions Stencil from Stencil Girl.   (Sometimes I like to stencil onto tissue paper rather than directly onto my substrate, because you can "audition" the placement of the images plus the tissue paper adds texture.  Here's a post with a video about stenciling onto tissue paper.)

I carefully tore the tissue paper into strips and adhered it onto the letters using Liquitex Matte Medium.

I went to Home Depot and had them cut me a piece of wood.  I sanded it, painted it with black gesso, and then gave it sheen with Liquitex Glazing medium.  Then I adhered the letters using E6000 Craft Adhesive.

My sweet husband mounted the wood on the wall in my studio, opposite my work table.  I see it every day, and it's a great reminder to stop and BREATHE

Here is the list of all the artists participating in this blog hop.  If you're following along, your next stop is my dear friend Judy Shea.   If you just happened upon my blog, definitely check out all the inspiration and creativity by this fabulous team!

Stencil Girl and Walnut Hollow are both giving away products on this blog hop. All comments on the hop are eligible for the giveaway. The more blogs you comment on, the more chances you have to win! The giveaway will close on Sunday, March 2nd at 11:59PM Central Time.

AND... I am having an additional giveaway!

I have an extra copy of my "Runes" stencil that I will give away to one commenter on my blog.  (Here's a post from Stencil Girl Talk where Leslie Tucker Jennison used this stencil.)  You have until 11:49PM EST, Sunday March 2 for this giveaway too.

Your comments make me so happy and let me know you were here. I read and treasure every comment and will happily answer any questions as soon as I can.

One Little Word UP - CALM and Giveaway

I'm on a 10 day service trip in Guatemala.  It's our 9th one!  But while I'm there...

the "word up" this month at One Little Word is CALMThe wonderful animals of Corrine Gilman, the beautiful girls of Mindy Lacefield, and this poem by William Wordsworth, inspired my art journal page.
Calm is All Nature as a Resting Wheel
Calm is all nature as a resting wheel.
The kine are couched upon the dewy grass;
The horse alone, seen dimly as I pass,
Is cropping audibly his later meal:
Dark is the ground; a slumber seems to steal
O'er vale, and mountain, and the starless sky.
Now, in this blank of things, a harmony,
Home-felt, and home-created, comes to heal
That grief for which the senses still supply
Fresh food; for only then, when memory
Is hushed, am I at rest. My Friends! restrain
Those busy cares that would allay my pain;
Oh! leave me to myself, nor let me feel
The officious touch that makes me droop again.

On either side of my "Calm" spread, I spread modeling paste through my Cascading Feathers and Hebrew Calligraphy Hamsa stencils.  The words in the Hebrew stencil, and the feathers, calm me.   The translation is:

May God bless you and keep you
May God cause the divine light to shine upon you and be gracious to you
May God turn toward you, and grant you peace
(Numbers 6: 24-26).

I hope you'll create something inspired by the word "calm."  And please link up at One Little Word!

Last month, the word up was Aspire, and I promised a giveaway to someone if they linked up.  The winner is Ruth L!  Ruth, email me at jessicabethsporn (at) gmail (dot) com and I will send the Jump for Joy stencil to you!

Comment on this post by Sunday night, 2/23 at 11:59PM EST, for a chance to win the Cascading Leaves stencil!  (And on the Stencil Girl site, you can see MaryBeth Shaw working with it!)

2/25/14 Update: The winner is Die Amelie - Claudia!  Congratulations Claudia! Send me your snail mail addres (to jessicabethsporn (@) gmail (.) com and Stencil Girl will send it to you!

I'll have another stencil giveaway of my Runes stencil on that blog hop.

Quick Valentine's Day Canvas With Lots of Texture

I made a quick Valentine for my honey and wanted to show you how.

I used embossing paste, powder and stencils to give it lots of texture.  These techniques could be used for any project.

I started with a 6 x 6 chipboard square that I had collaged months ago.  I cut out a heart from a manila file folder, and used it as a mask and spread modeling paste away from it to the edges.

I played with Derwent Inktense Blocks, Neocolor II crayons, Viva Decor Modeling and Special Effects Pastes, and UTEE powder.  I used some random butterflies from my stash too.

I forgot to stop and take pictures, but here's a quick video as luckily I had the camera running!

Stay tuned for tomorrow's post - it's the new word for One Little Word, and I have a giveaway too!

Happy Valentine's Day!

Your comments make my heart flutter!

Congratulations to everyone who participated in in our 7 Day Stencil Scavenger Hunt with stencils from Stencil Girl! I hope you all enjoyed "the hunt" and getting to know Stencil Girl's fabulous collection a little better!  Most of the images I created are now available as prints on Society6!

Caroline Duncan is the winner for Day 3!  Congrats Carolyn.  I will be sending you the Medieval Leaves stencil!

Day Four was this edgy lady and these stencils:

Congratulations Trish Wood!  Squares and Circles is yours!

Day Five featured my daughters and these stencils:

Thank you all for your sweet comments about my girls!  Karen Buchanan won this one, and I'll be sending her the Flying Tulips.

Day Six stumped a lot of people, who thought the image in the wings was Michelle Ward's Marrakech stencil.   But it was actually a small detail from Nathalie Kalbach's Elephant March.  When I first used her stencil in this blog hop, I knew that eventually I would use this detail on its own one day!

Random.org picked Claudine C.  as the winner of this hunt!  I will be sending you the Retro Flowers and Circles Stencil.

Last but not least - Day Seven.   I wish I had boots like these...

And the winner of this one is Lorrie Takeda!  Borders 9J is yours!

Last but not least, there were 16 women who participated every single day.  I decided to do one more drawing of just these women, and the winner is  Dee Spillane!

I will be sending you the Sporn Flowers Positive Stencil.  Enjoy!

Winners - please email your addresses to jessicabethsporn (at) gmail (dot) com!

I hope you enjoyed this Scavenger Hunt as much as I did.  I really enjoyed thinking outside the box with these stencils and hope I've given you some inspiration and ideas.  I will be taking a blogging break as we travel to Antigua, Guatemala for our 9th service trip!

I have posts scheduled for the 15th for One Little Word, and 24th for a special Stencil Girl/Walnut Hollow blog hop, and will look forward to seeing you all when I return.
